At MechaWorks, we believe in environmental responsibility that makes sense. We don’t just stop at the notion of being green, we’ve implemented policies that go above and beyond what most startups deploy. And, we combine that with making sure our technology gives back whenever possible.

Part of looking at the environment doesn’t just focus on our carbon footprint. We constantly ask how we can report, effort, contribute, and engineer things that help both the planet, and the people inside of it.

Grid-ing the Future

One thing that we are a major sponsor of is grid computing. We believe that our huge investment in technology should be used for the common good. As such, not only do we provide high levels of GPU computing to the Folding@Home project, we also contribute CPU computing to the World Community Grid. Laptops, desktops, and even servers.

Because of this split between two projects, we certainly aren’t going to win any contests in performance on any single project. But, our goal has been to make the greatest contribution for our equipment, not the best ranking. It’s an example we hope others join us in setting.

We even go as far as to issue our staff hardware upgrades, to allow their personal systems to contribute. Yeah, they can game on them as well… but we work with our staff even at home to contribute to this vital research, 24/7/365.

The Office is a TV Show

Part of our environmental responsibility is asking the question “Do we need an office?”

We encourage our staff to work from home, rather than work in a cubicle. We keep office space to a bare minimum to avoid the need for commuting to work. When we do deploy offices, we evaluate cheaper and greener options such as coworking centers that save even more money.

Video conferencing, virtual offices, and instant messaging define the workspace for MechaWorks. That’s good for us, and good for the environment.
