Working at MechaWorks?

MechaWorks is evolving. We’re gearing up to set up new offices and paving the way for the next wave of products and services that we’re working on. At the same time, we’re continuously improving our existing set of web sites and products.

Most of our positions are indeed freelance. We do this to empower our writers to have the flexibility to meet our requirements, while having the freedom to work from home… and mix things up a bit with multiple gigs.

A lot of our new positions however will change that. Our new offices will have a lot of positions in-house and on-site. As such, you can expect that everything from salary to benefits… will be building as we go along. We’re looking for dynamic folks that can roll with the punches. That’s part of the startup phase at any company.

That’s not to say we aren’t willing to reward those that come on board now. From stock options to bonus pay benefits, we want to make sure that everyone coming on-board will help make MechaWorks a success. We believe that’s necessary in order to pave the way for building game rooms, hiring chefs, and getting 20% time.

Until then, we still want to arm those headed to our Silicon Valley offices with plenty of LAN gaming, company food runs, and taking an hour or two each day to kick back and look at the extraordinary products that we’re working on.

XBMC Senior Engineer

We’re looking for someone familiar with adapting and improving XBMC. We’re working on something big, and we need a few additional team members to make it happen.

The Senior Developer position will require taking a significant lead on the project, as well as having developers working at your direction. You will work with the project manager to facilitate many initial developments, as well as side proof-of-concepts and some general tasks relative to the project.

Qualifications:

You must have XBMC development experience. Requirements for this include being able to demonstrate XBMC contributions, or contributions to XBMC branches (Boxee, Plex, etc).

Having a computer science degree is a strong plus, but not required. However, this development position will require serious C++ experience.

Being located in Silicon Valley is required for this position.

Initially this will be a part-time position, but will quickly expand to being a full-time role. You will help guide the project as we quickly ramp up into long-term product development.

How to Apply:

  • First, have your resume ready.

  • Attach your resume with a brief introduction email. Send this email to jobs@mechaworks.com
  • (In case you didn’t click the link, make sure the subject line has xbmc-senior-eng in it)

  • We’ll talk further from there. Be willing to sign an NDA, as this is one of those secret-stuff™ jobs.

Linux Senior Engineer

We’re looking for someone familiar with all-things-Linux. Your job will be to lead development of an exciting new project for the Linux operating system. As such, extensive familiarity in various Linux distributions, creating Linux software, and manipulating the Linux kernel, will be tapped on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

You’ve got to love Linux. You’ve got to have an appreciation and a passion for the platform.

This position will be handling much of the under-the-hood system software development, but an applicant must have a good sense of user perspective. In other words, you must be able to implement things so that they are well-adapted from a user standpoint. You will work with the project manager, and the rest of the team to achieve this.

GUI creation is not a requirement for this position. However, you should know how to call and interact with several layers of GUI, from X/GNOME/KDE, on up to application UI.

Finally, while a legal knowledge certainly isn’t needed, you should be aware of the different types of open source licenses, and the implications of using code from different licenses. Conceptual knowledge and understanding of this is sufficient to get started.

Being located in Silicon Valley is required for this position.

Initially this will be a part-time position, but will quickly expand to being a full-time role. You will help guide the project as we quickly ramp up into long-term product development.

How to Apply:

XBMC Skin Designer

We’re looking for someone to paint the town… or, well, just skin XBMC. We’re looking for a skilled graphic arts designer that can handle the task of developing a custom theme for the application.

Qualifications:

You’ve got to make great, consistent graphics. And, we consider great to be something that looks amazing, but also is simple for the average user.

We’d like to see some past work on UI design. Because you’re designing an entire skin from scratch, you’ve got to be able to show that you can create human-ready GUI.

A familiarity with existing Six Foot interfaces is a must. Specifically, you should be able to know how Mac and Windows fundamentally differ from Apple TV and Media Center.

Attention to detail is a must. You’ll be assisting with developing UI standards and guidelines for the entire project, with a focus on consistency throughout.

Being located in Silicon Valley is a strong plus, but not required.

Initially this will be a part-time position, but will quickly expand to being a full-time role. You will help guide the project as we quickly ramp up into long-term product development.

  • Attach your resume with a brief introduction email. Send this email to jobs@mechaworks.com

Chief Editor – PhoneNews.com Wired & PhoneNews.com Nerds

Chief Editors – PhoneNews.com Wired & PhoneNews.com Nerds

We’re looking for talented people with telecommunications savvy, who want to take their passions into a well-paying career in blogging and publishing. Specifically, we’re looking for two people to lead new chief editor position openings on upcoming sections of PhoneNews.com.

PhoneNews.com Nerds is an exciting new section that will cater to the mobile die-hard enthusiasts. These are people that jailbreak their phones from day one, and were doing it before it was cool to jailbreak. They know their Android from their webOS, and just about everything in-between. Your job will be to pick and help write daily news articles that give these people the latest breaking news… that only they could love reading non-stop.

PhoneNews.com Wired is also new, but focuses on more mainstream coverage. Specifically, it takes the range of consumer-friendly mobile industry coverage, and applies that treatment to the rest of the telecommunications sector. Everything from DSL to cutting-edge fiber connections, and everything that runs on them, are up for coverage. From saving money on your connection to completely-impractical VoIP options, your job will be to help cover it all.

You must be able to write in proper English. PhoneNews.com is not a blog, and you must have writing skills that would pass muster at any ordinary newspaper. While blogging experience is a plus, we expect and require excellent writing skills, and an ability to adapt to our existing writing style.

In addition, some basic knowledge of HTML is necessary. You do not need to be a web designer or an HTML expert, but you must know how to tweak or edit source code when needed. Experience with WordPress as a publishing platform is a huge plus.

PhoneNews.com Chief Editors are paid on a freelance basis, per article. We do not have quotas, but you must contribute articles on at least four days per week. This ensures that you will maintain a regular member of the team, and is necessary to allot that time in your schedule. In addition, Chief Editors are paid a revenue share of the site’s profits.

If you meet all these requirements, we encourage you to apply and become the newest member of the PhoneNews.com team!
